I believe we should take the holidays off
only on the days on which they fall.
For example, October 8th is not
Columbus Day; October 12th is Columbus Day. Wouldn't you rather have a Friday off, for a
change? It's still a long weekend this
year, anyway.
Veterans' Day, November 11th, falls
on a Sunday, so why do we get any other day off if it's not 11/11? Isn't the whole point of 11/11 to actually BE
11/11?
I'm not overly fond of these made up
holidays, either, like Presidents' Day, nor the observation of other special
birthdays like MLK and Christ. Okay,
Christmas I really like, but you don't hear anyone out buying gifts for others
to celebrate MLKmas nor Lincolnmas nor Washingtonmas, do you?
If we're going to start celebrating
holidays like this, then we surely should have off Halloween and then All
Saints' Day, which follows it. It's only
fair. I'm Anglo-Saxon, so shouldn't I
also be given Boxing Day, too? What's
fair is fair. October 8th is National
Children's Day and American Play Tag Day, both reasons to celebrate.
Anyway, Happy Make-Believe It's Columbus
Day, all, and make sure you speak Portuguese, ask Spaniards for money to back
your wildest endeavors, and sail three ships from point A to point H (because
you cannot manage a straight line of points BCDEFG in between).
After all, if we're going to be given the
day off to celebrate, it's only fair we do it properly.
