Oh, the joys of technology ... and the horrors of their demise.
Today at school we have zero internet access. This happened recently when we had Back To School Night for parents. We couldn't show our websites or access any district sites to show off our "new, modern, technologically advanced" school.
The irony!
Today, the Net shuts down yet again, leaving us all unable to do such simple things as send attendance, post homework, and check email. This is not always a bad thing unless the day's lesson depends upon accessing the internet.
The best thing, though? No phones.
Yes, our new school has chosen to forego the intercom and go with phones in every classroom. (Very old school, actually, but what do I know.) The difference between that technology and the new technology is that the phone system is directly connected to the Internet, unlike the olden days when a landline was its own separate entity.
No phone system means parents cannot call to complain about how we treat their cherubs. Best of all, no phone calls can come from the office to our rooms asking us to send Suzy down for her lost lunch, or Kevin out of the room for bad behavior that happened a week ago, or bitching because we forgot to send the attendance electronically ... again.
Of course, we cannot reach the nurse or the principal in case of an emergency, but sometimes we get no response, anyway, so we are used to flying without any nets.
This will be week four of school, and already technology has proven itself to be fragile at best. Before anyone can blink an eye, we might have to go really old school and actually ... gasp ... WRITE ON THE BOARD.
Oh, the horror, indeed.
